Research
The ETHEREAL Lab is a dynamic team of researchers, innovators, and community collaborators dedicated to advancing assistive technology for neurodivergent individuals.
The team includes experts in fields such as extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), and human-computer interaction, all working together to create accessible, user-centered solutions.
Our Mission
Our mission at the ETHEREAL Research Group is to design and develop cutting-edge, user-centered technologies that enhance communication, accessibility, and autonomy for neurodivergent individuals. Through innovative research, collaboration, and community engagement, we aim to break down barriers, promote inclusion, and create practical solutions that improve lives and inspire a more equitable future.
Current Research
The ETHEREAL Research Group develops innovative technologies to support nonspeaking autistic individuals and other neurodivergent communities, focusing on communication, independence, and inclusion.
Key advancements include the HoloBoard, an augmented reality (AR) platform that enables independent communication practice via a virtual letterboard, and ViC (Virtual Communication Partner), which simulates guided practice without requiring a human assistant. These tools enhance privacy, flexibility, and accessibility.
ETHEREAL also explores avatar-based remote interaction systems, allowing communication partners (CRPs) to assist users via AR headsets with motion mirroring, bridging geographical gaps. Eye-tracking technology further reduces physical and cognitive demands, making communication more intuitive.
Extensive user studies across Canada and the U.S. refine these tools, ensuring they meet diverse sensory needs and foster autonomy. ETHEREAL also develops social XR platforms for safe, immersive social interaction and personalized learning tools to support neurodivergent students in post-secondary education.
Through innovation and real-world collaboration, ETHEREAL advances accessibility and inclusion in assistive technology.
